Jan Gardner (Democratic)
I want Frederick County to be the best place to live, work, and raise a family. My vision is for a vibrant job center not just a “bedroom community” to our surrounding metropolitan areas. Housing and jobs are related. I support providing enough housing to accommodate future population projections and local job growth. I want a greater focus on commercial growth. Our future prosperity depends on attracting and keeping the younger generation or “millennials” who want to live urban, live near their jobs, and have an active night life with restaurants and entertainment. We must attract more good-paying jobs.
Blaine R. Young (Republican)
I will work to properly manage growth. When I came into office, I restored the property rights to a number of individuals who were wrongly downzoned under the Gardner Board. We were able to do this while effectively managing growth.
For the first time we actually have a plan moving forward. Our current residents don’t have to fear their property will suddenly be downzoned or that development planning will be done in a hodgepodge manner. It is known where new developments are going and where they are not per the Comprehensive Plan.
The Chamber surveyed all candidates and assembled their responses. Though all candidates were sent a copy of our survey, not all of them responded. The responses received are presented verbatim.
